Several years ago, an English coach explained to me how to distinguish discussions between being ON the topic and being IN the topic. The nuance was a little subtle for me at the time.
Today, as I observe more and more meetings, I realise how much time is so often consumed on details, with erratic interventions on subjects the speakers sometimes do not even know.
Many participants dive IN the topic too early.
Whereas many meetings should instead be focused on identifying the tasks to be done and the responsibilities for carrying them out, staying ON the topic. And arranging to meet the experts later, so they can present the results of their deep dive IN the topic.
In your next meetings, take the time to observe how the discussions unfold… and how important it is not to put the cart before the horse.
