How do you run the round-robins in your meetings?

Just yesterday, I was having a conversation with the Managing Director of a company. The subject was the round-robins at the start of their executive committee meetings, meant to get participants on board. As the conversation moved along, he interrupted me and said he was realising that their round-robins, originally designed to capture everyone’s state of mind, had turned into a string of long monologues in which each person came to recount their activities. At the risk of wearying their colleagues and shrinking to next to nothing the time devoted to discussion and co-construction.
