Just yesterday I was sitting in on a management committee meeting.
Once again, the topics seemed to have been chosen so that the thorny ones would never come up.
The agenda held nothing but small fry that interested only a tiny fraction of the room and could have been dealt with by email.
I wondered whether this team had ever experienced a meeting where a committee member had come in with a problem and left with a brilliant solution to move a project forward. A meeting during which someone had agreed to show vulnerability in order to draw on the best of the others.
Then I remembered the sessions called “challenge and build” that we used to organise at Danone to test ideas or presentations. Small-group sessions we organised to add value to our ideas and presentations. Gruelling sessions, because we exposed ourselves — but exhilarating too, because we left them enriched and convinced that we are far more intelligent together.
