I have done my share of meetings. A lot of them.
In different formats: sitting around a boardroom table, around a restaurant table, in a negotiation box, standing up, on a plane, on the phone, in a bar, in a warehouse on a stack of pallets, by videoconference, from up on a stage, standing or sitting, on a golf green. I can say I have tried everything. As often as possible, as close as possible to where the people I was meeting actually worked.
With different people: Danone executives, company leaders, buyers from the big retail chains, factory workers, musicians, golfers, government ministers…
With different objectives: to dream up scenarios that were sometimes baroque, to express appreciation, to convince, to be convinced, to debate and to do battle, but most often to decide and to turn dreams into projects.
With hindsight, I realise that I always found a certain pleasure in them. The pleasure of having to adapt to the situation, the participants and the objective being pursued. Of observing how each person does or does not step into a role. Of seeing how each person reacts to what I might say. Because while I talk a lot in meetings, what I love above all is observing, decoding, picking up what each person is not saying, what leads each person to champion this or that idea. It is my way of taking a run-up. Of letting my intuition rise, and then finding the angle that will set everyone in motion, moving from talk to action.
I have always steered clear of management books. I have always trusted my instinct and what I learnt from watching others. But there are books like this one that speak to you, and you tell yourself they give you simple keys you can put into practice.
My father had me read Le Petit Prince when I was 10. I think it was too early.
I have just read this book devoted to Reuniology. I wonder whether I read it too late.
