I sat in on the management committee of a mid-sized company.
A management committee the likes of which I rarely see.
I watched everything that makes a winning team go by:
– presence and listening,
– solidarity,
– the leader’s vulnerability,
– thoroughly prepared speakers,
– not a single person in the room who wasn’t a member,
– the discipline to stay on topic,
– checking on earlier commitments,
– formalising the new ones.
In short, everything that builds a group’s psychological safety — which we know is the strongest predictor of its performance.
I remembered what the leader had told me at our first meeting.
He said he had used the metaphor of rugby to get the team into working order when he took charge: everyone in position, moving forward in a coordinated way in the same direction.
