23. Making meeting improvements last

I am often asked the question:
“How do you make sure the progress
lasts over time?”
It is not that complicated, actually.
There are three simple principles to follow. The same principles proposed by Rocky, the rooster in the animated film Chicken Run.

Hard work.

Perseverance.

Hard work.
So you will need twice as much hard work as perseverance 🙂
To go beyond this half-joke, I recommend adopting an experimentation mindset.
It is a bit like making a successful chantilly cream.
The first time, on the advice of a friend, you chill the bowl before pouring in the whipping cream to whisk it, you tell yourself it takes an effort. True enough.
But you only need to have done it once to never imagine doing it any other way again. Provided you are fond of chantilly cream, of course…
Well, it is exactly the same with meetings.
Select the winning moves.
Apply them consciously and with discipline.
They will very quickly become self-evident, both to you and to others, and then turn into habits.
Another way to make progress last…
Modelling by the boss.
The boss arrives on time for meetings… The whole company will arrive on time for meetings…
The boss is demanding about how the objective of meetings is formulated… It will become second nature for everyone…
The boss recaps the decisions taken at the end of each discussion… It will become a mantra across the whole organisation.
The boss takes the time to thank the participants at the end of meetings… I will let you imagine what follows…
It really is no more complicated than that!!!
Hard work. Perseverance. Hard work.
