12. Daring to decide in meetings

Translated from the French original.

The other day, I was observing a video conference.

Fifteen people were online.

The purpose was to give a project the green light.

Only 6 participants were actually taking part.

Two objections kept coming back in the exchanges: one was about the selling price, the other about the training of the sales team.

After an hour, the manager spoke up and said something that sounded like:

“Come on, let’s go. We will sort out the price question and the training question later.”

I fell off my chair…

The meeting time had merely served to take the worst possible decision.

That of approving the project while two large blocks still stood on the road to success and commitment.

Nobody reacted.

Perhaps it was part of the organisation’s culture.

A decision is a decision.
It must be clear for those who take it, and even more so for those who put it into practice.

Never give your agreement to a decision you would not be able to explain to your teams.
